The 2004 season was a big step for me, as I was only 16 and about to take the leap from karting to single seaters.
I hadn’t driven a car before so my first experience in the Formula Renault felt quite daunting, as I was keen to prove myself and that I could deliver results.
It didn’t take long for me to put those feelings behind me and after a few more test sessions I was on the pace, setting consistent lap times. Just a couple of weeks after my first test, I was entered into the Italian championship with team Itloox Racing.
With lots of new tracks to learn and a new car to adjust to, I was clearly mid-to-back of the field at the beginning of the season but the team were encouraged by how quickly I adapted. It wasn’t long before I was dicing with experienced single seater racers and started to prove my potential.
As the season progressed my lap times kept on improving and I moved up the gird. By the end of the season I was finishing just outside the top 10, and putting in competitive lap times.
When the winter series came I was ready to show everyone what I was capable of. Although I was constantly just a couple of tenths off of the fastest driver, I suffered problems in qualifying. This meant I had to start mid-field and carve my way through the pack to finish in the top ten – proving I can still do it!
